Why are Sports Physicals Important?

It’s back-to-school season and there is always a lot to do. Every school year, there’s a plethora of things to check off your list before your kids head off to school. If they plan on doing any sports, one of those things should be a sports physical. But, why are sports physicals important?

What is a Sports Physical?

A sports physical is an examination done to ensure someone who plans on participating in sports doesn’t have any conditions that could be exacerbated by sports. Many states require them before allowing your child to participate in sports. However, getting a sports physical is a good idea even if it isn’t required. Most sports physicals have two main components. They consist of a discussion of medical history, followed by a physical exam.

Medical History

The medical history portion will give the examiner insight into your past medical issues. This helps the examiner determine any underlying health issues. Long-term health issues are one of the major things they’re looking for. Things like asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy are important for the examiner to be aware of. Your heart health is also immensely important. Family history of heart disease, disabilities from heart disease, or any other cardiac issues are typically a problem for athletes.

Underlining health issues can be hard to spot. The examiner will most likely ask if you get chest pain, trouble breathing, or dizziness during exercise. Past injuries, like concussions or sprains, are important to note. If you’re taking any medications or have any allergies, you should tell the examiner.

Physical Exam

The physical exam is to make sure your body is in a condition that is safe for sports. Your heart, lungs, throat, abdomen, ears, and nose will probably be inspected. They’ll record your height and weight, as well as your blood pressure and pulse. Your limbs will also be inspected. Things like joint strength, flexibility, and posture can all change how sports affect your body. If anything looks suspicious, the examiner may recommend a specialist to make sure it is safe to participate in sports.

Why are Sports Physicals Important?

A sports physical may seem excessive, but it can seriously help. They can prevent many injuries from occurring. If it isn’t safe for you or your child to participate in sports, it’s a good thing to know before you’re doing sports. Sports physicals can also help you adjust your current lifestyle to something that allows you to play sports safely. For example, if you have asthma, you may be recommended a different inhaler that will allow you to breathe easier when you run. Without a sports physical, you’re far more likely to be hurt or majorly injured by playing sports.
