What to expect for your first time visiting a chiropractor

First Time Visiting A Chiropractor

First things first, don’t worry! Every one of our patients saw their first chiropractor at some point during their life and had the same questions you have right now. The Chiropractic Center of Erie and Chiropractic Center of Longmont believe the best way to relieve stress on your first time visiting a chiropractor is to come in knowing what to expect. Once you know what to expect for your first visit, our expert team will make you feel like family from your first phone call and throughout your entire treatment process. Whether you’re visiting a chiropractor for the first time, or you’re visiting a new chiropractor for the first time, we’ll let you know what to expect.

Initial phone conversation

The Chiropractic Center of Erie and Chiropractic Center of Longmont train their receptionist staff to listen and ask the right questions during your very first phone call. Our doctors want to understand your needs and previous treatment methods that have been tried to resolve your issue. We use this information to help point us in the right direction even before your first visit. Our receptionists will also get you scheduled at the office that’s most convenient for you whether that’s in Erie or in Longmont.

Arriving at the office

Patients arrive and check-in with the receptionist at the front desk. They will confirm your appointment time and let the doctors know you’ve arrived for your new patient exam and treatment. Our receptionists focus on providing the best possible experience during your visit and are a wealth of caring and knowledge. They often answer questions about insurance, treatment options, and what to expect for your first time visiting a chiropractor.

New patient exam

All of the doctors perform the same initial new patient exam. They combine a visual, hands-on, and questionnaire approach to ensure that all bases are covered prior to providing any treatment. This new patient exam focuses on listening not only to what you’re saying, but what your body says as we observe you. This is coupled with range of motion testing, orthopedic, and neurological examinations. Our doctors also explain what they are doing every step of the way and why to help build a rapport. They encourage questions and welcome the opportunity to share their knowledge of how the body’s systems integrate and work together.

First chiropractic treatment

Once the new patient exam concludes, the doctor recommends a unique treatment plan for your body. Our experts gear this plan to each individual to ensure quick relief and a holistic approach to ensure we treat the issue and not just the symptoms. We offer an award-winning treatment process to help achieve your goals. This consists of chiropractic adjustments, whether hands-on or with the activator tool, dolphin neurostim, and soft tissue massage. This treatment process not only provides patients the relief they crave, but it also helps them hold adjustments, and therefore feel better, for longer.

Payment and follow up treatments scheduled

After your first chiropractic treatment finishes, you will return to the front desk and our excellent receptionist team will process your payment for the treatment that day. Both the Chiropractic Center of Erie and Chiropractic Center of Longmont accept the same types of insurances. We currently accept plans from AetnaUnited Health CareBlue Cross / Blue ShieldCigna, plus other plans. They will also schedule you for your next visit and advise you to drink plenty of water to aid in the removal of any toxins released from joints and soft tissues that are now moving and feed from the tension.

If this is your first time visiting a chiropractor, your body will need the water to help it adjust to the new experience. Initially, many patients require frequent visits while their body learns to hold proper alignment. Over time, these visits become less frequent as the body naturally relearns proper alignment and holds it for longer.

Whether you’re visiting a chiropractor for the first time or you’re just visiting a new chiropractor for the first time, our process remains the same. We believe that a new patient exam provides crucial information to the patient and the doctor about the ailment and helps make treatment more effective. This process for welcoming new patients to our offices also builds a rapport with our team and helps patients feel more comfortable with their doctor. Often, patients change chiropractors because something wasn’t working correctly before. We try to identify these concerns upfront and truly focus on listening to the patient’s needs rather than offering a one-size-fits-all treatment plan.

Trying out chiropractic care for the first time causes many new patients anxiety. We believe that we can eliminate or drastically reduce this anxiety by providing new patients with a clear picture of what to expect when visiting a chiropractor for the first time. The Chiropractic Center of Erie and Chiropractic Center of Longmont strive to provide the best chiropractic care in Erie and Longmont respectively. This starts from the initial phone call and carries throughout the entire first visit to either of our offices.

Don’t worry, the excellent experience doesn’t stop after the first visit! We appreciate each one of our patients and they grow to feel like friends and family over time. We always look forward to welcoming new patients into our ever-growing family! If you still have questions about what to expect during your first chiropractor visit in Erie or Longmont, call our office today. We will gladly answer any questions you have whether you’re visiting Erie or Longmont. Contact us online or give us a call at 303-828-3000 or 303-772-1950.

How to find a good chiropractor - Dr Sharon Adjusting a patient

How To Find A Good Chiropractor

Many of our patients explain the same scenario after visiting us for a few adjustments and treatments. It usually starts out something like this, “I’m so happy I found you guys! You have no idea what it’s like to try and find a good chiropractor! We tried a few different chiropractors for a few visits each and got discouraged that we weren’t finding what we need. I just wish we knew how to find a good chiropractor without the hassle!” At the Chiropractic Center of Erie and Chiropractic Center of Longmont we know there are great chiropractors out there and we count ourselves among this group. Unfortunately, there are also others that focus more on bringing new patients in the door and less on actually providing the relief these patients need.

At Chiropractic Center of Erie and Chiropractic Center of Longmont we hear these stories and truly feel the same level of frustration. With this in mind, we decided to write about how to find a good chiropractor in Erie and Longmont. We thought who better to help you find a good chiropractor than other good chiropractors. We understand this topic is a little self-serving, and promise that there’s more to this article than “just choose us!” Without further ado, let’s dive in!

This step outranks all others in terms of importance. A recommendation from someone you trust carries a lot of weight when helping to find a good chiropractor in Erie and Longmont. These towns, while growing quickly still have a great small-town community feel and mentality. As with any community, the news will spread quickly if a chiropractor isn’t providing great treatment. The opposite holds true as well. A good chiropractor should not only have local coffee shop recommendations, they should have great reviews online for new patients to consider.

Several great schools exist that teach chiropractic care. The important thing to look for isn’t the name of the school, it’s whether or not their school is accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) This accreditation lets students and future patients trust the level of education the doctor received prior to treating patients. They base their accreditation on key values of integrity, accountability, collaboration, quality, and improvement. Furthermore, each chiropractor in Colorado, must meet all state standards for continuing education and more to keep their license.

Chiropractic care requires a hands-on process in many cases. This means a patient’s comfort with their doctor is critical. Have a conversation with the doctor and discuss what treatment looks like and what to expect during your first few visits. Watch for the relationships between the staff and the doctors. They work with doctors all day and see them in a different light than patients. If the relationships are good throughout the office, that’s a good indicator that doctors don’t just “put on a good face” for the patients, they are genuine through-and-through.

One of the most important things when considering how to find a good chiropractor is the type of treatment they provide. Where do they focus? Do they focus on providing quick adjustments for simple pain relief or are they focused on healing the body by keeping it aligned? How do they help your body hold your adjustments for the long-term? If they don’t have a plan for helping patients hold their adjustments, a patient can expect to need to visit frequently. At the Chiropractic Center of Erie and Chiropractic Center of Longmont we provide an award-winning treatment process. This treatment process focuses on providing quick relief for pain while also helping patients hold their adjustments by retraining their body to stay in proper alignment.

Finding a good chiropractor in Erie and Longmont doesn’t have to be a challenge any more. While we believe that we offer the best chiropractic care in Longmont and Erie, we also understand we aren’t the only good chiropractor out there. We wrote this article to hopefully help future chiropractic patients more easily find a good chiropractor on their first try, without the hassle we hear about from many of our new patients. Before committing to seeing a chiropractor regularly, we recommend asking for recommendations and reading reviews. In addition to getting referrals, we also recommend looking into their educational background and licensure, assessing your comfort level with the doctor, and asking about the treatment process.

If you’re interested in learning more about how to find a good chiropractor in Erie or Longmont, call our office today. We are dedicated to being the best chiropractor serving Erie, Longmont, and the surrounding areas. Contact us online or give us a call at 303-828-3000 or 303-772-1950.

Woman experiencing lower pack pain prior to seeing a chiropractor during pregnancy

Chiropractor During Pregnancy

Pregnancy illustrates the incredible power of the human body. Unfortunately, it also causes a lot of strain on a woman’s body. Even more unfortunate for some women, a lot of pain medicine causes harmful side-effects during pregnancy for both mom and child. This leaves several pregnant women in discomfort and outright pain in many instances without any idea of how to find relief. That’s where skilled and trained chiropractors come in! A skilled chiropractor, trained properly to treat pregnant women, can help provide the relief these new mothers deserve! Seeing a chiropractor during pregnancy provides pain relief, improves the body’s ability to naturally communicate and help itself, and in many cases provides a smoother birth for baby and mom.

During pregnancy, the body increases the production of hormones dedicated to loosening joints and ligaments. These hormones help the body grow and make room for the new baby safely. They also allow your weight to shift down and lowers your center of gravity. During this period of time, the mother’s body is rapidly changing and shifting. These rapid changes couple with the hormones to relax ligaments, pull the body out of natural alignment and create more discomfort for the mom. Nearly all pregnant women suffer from back pain during the course of their pregnancy. The likelihood of a strained muscle increases as well since many women struggle to find balance with their ever-changing center of gravity.

Safe Treatments During Pregnancy

As always, the first thought when working with pregnant moms is safety. Our doctors are trained to treat pregnant women safely. This means changing adjustment positions to ensure no pressure is added to mom’s belly. Furthermore, we stop the use of Dolphin Neurostim and other modalities on pregnant women to ensure no complications for mom or baby.

Chiropractic Adjustments During Pregnancy

We understand the changes a mom’s body goes through to make room for the new baby. We also understand that the body prepares not only to grow the new baby also to give birth. We help the body keep proper alignment during the pregnancy to provide pain relief for mom and an easier passage for the new baby to enter the world. By keeping the spine, neck, and hips aligned our chiropractors provide the adjustments women need for themselves and their soon-to-arrive little one.

Chiropractic Massage During Pregnancy

As ligaments grow and the body adjusts to carrying weight in different positions and adding new weight, it’s common for muscles to tighten under the strain. A skilled chiropractor, like our doctors, know the layout of the specific muscles and ligaments and are trained in relaxing them. This chiropractic massage for pregnancy provides pain relief and a more comfortable period of growth for the mother. We also have trained massage therapists on staff.

Chiropractors specialize in putting the body into proper alignment. This alignment provides pain relief and relieves stress on ligaments, joints, nerves, and muscles as the body begins to grow and change. While these benefits are fantastic, perhaps the most important benefit for expecting mothers is the body’s improved lines of communication from the brain to the body through the nervous system. By keeping the spine in proper alignment throughout pregnancy, the body’s systems are able to naturally provide what mom needs through unimpeded nerve signals. A properly aligned spine opens up the nervous system, digestive system, and endocrine system. This helps the mother’s body naturally help itself through this changing time.

According to the CDC, over 3 million American women gave birth in 2019. Each one of them experienced some of the most wonderful feelings and changes of their lives. Unfortunately, pregnancy takes a toll on the mother’s body and often creates a lot of discomfort. Our skilled chiropractors and their patients can attest that seeing a chiropractor during pregnancy provides relief and in many cases, smoother labor. Does Medical Insurance Cover Chiropractic Treatment?

The Chiropractic Center of Erie and Chiropractic Center of Longmont understands that the cost of chiropractic care can be prohibitive for some. We work to ensure that our prices remain as low as possible and that includes working with some major insurance providers. We regularly hear the question, “Does medical insurance cover chiropractic treatment?” The short answer is yes, but there’s more to learn. Each insurance provider treats chiropractic care differently depending on your insurance plan. Learn about some of the more common ways insurances cover chiropractic treatment below.

Chiropractic treatment offers an alternative to medication or procedures and increases in popularity year-after-year. This means many insurance companies cover chiropractic care as part of what they call “alternative” care. We believe that most medical procedures should be alternatives to natural, holistic approaches such as chiropractic treatment, instead of the other way around. As a result of being labeled as alternative care, however, many insurance companies place certain restrictions on what they will cover. Our team outlined common restrictions below, however, we recommend reviewing your policy in-depth to learn your specific restrictions. As always, if you have any questions relating to your specific coverage and how we can maximize your medical benefits, give us a call at 303-828-3000 in Erie or 303-772-1950 in Longmont, CO.

Many Insurance Plans Require A General Doctor to Refer Patients to Chiropractic Care

These insurance plans require patients get a referral from their general practitioner or a specialist prior to paying for any chiropractic treatment.

Insurance Plans Often Set a Cap on How Many Times a Patient Can See a Chiropractor in a Month or Year

For these insurance plans, the providers restrict the number of visits a patient can use for chiropractic care. These providers enforce these restrictions on a per month or per year basis and won’t pay for visits outside of the cap set for the time period. Our staff recommends calling your insurance company in addition to us verifying your benefits as occasionally the insurance website doesn’t always detail the specifics of your policy.

Some Insurance Plans May Stop Covering Chiropractic Care If Your Treatment Hits a Plateau

This happens when your insurance plan authorizes chiropractic care for the treatment of a specific ailment, but not for “maintenance” or “long-term” care. These plans highlight the reason to select a chiropractor that has a proven track record of helping patients through recovery and rehabilitation. The Chiropractic Center of Erie and Chiropractic Center of Longmont focus on healing the patients quickly and effectively with our award-winning treatment process.

While chiropractic treatment is shown as the most effective treatment for many musculoskeletal ailments and thus increases in popularity throughout the United States, some insurance companies still don’t cover chiropractic care. In these instances, patients may cover their costs for treatment out of their own pocket. Many patients still prefer to pay out-of-pocket for chiropractic care due to the effectiveness of the treatment options. In these circumstances, it is even more critical to select a chiropractor that focuses on healing patients quickly and effectively like our doctors.

Both the Chiropractic Center of Erie and Chiropractic Center of Longmont accept the same types of insurances. We currently accept plans from Aetna, United Health Care, Blue Cross / Blue Shield, Cigna, plus other plans.

We regularly hear the question, “Does medical insurance cover chiropractic treatment?” The short answer is usually yes. As chiropractic treatment increases in effectiveness and popularity throughout the United States, many insurance companies are opting to cover chiropractic treatment. They provide these benefits as part of their “alternative care” options which allows them to place certain restrictions on their benefits. These restrictions include limiting the number of visits or dollar amounts allowed throughout the month or year. In addition, they may restrict chiropractic treatment to patients who have been referred by a general practitioner. If you’re interested in learning more about how chiropractic can help treat many conditions naturally in Erie or Longmont, schedule your consultation for treatment today. Man sitting on bed suffering from sciatica prior to chiropractic treatment

Sciatica Pain Relief

According to Mayo Clinic, Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from your lower back, through your hips and buttocks, and down each leg. The Chiropractic Center of Erie and Chiropractic Center of Longmont understand that sciatica pain relief changes patients lives. Patients suffering from sciatic nerve pain often deal with leg pain, tingling or burning in the legs, numbness, loss of strength, mobility issues, and more. As expert chiropractors in Erie and Longmont and the surrounding areas, we regularly treat patients with sciatica with our award-winning treatment process.

Sciatica pain relief can be particularly hard to find for many people simply because it often goes undiagnosed for long periods of time. Many people disregard the pain and numbness entirely or chalk it up to other issues without getting to the root of the problem. Lumbar herniated discs represent the largest percentage of sciatica cases in the United States. This happens when the herniated disc compresses nerve roots within the spine. This can be complicated by misaligned vertebra which closes down the openings where the nerves pass from the cord into the body. Other causes of sciatic nerve pain include degeneration, spinal stenosis, and spondylolisthesis. A skilled chiropractor can provide sciatica pain relief in all of these situations and help the body heal naturally with a treatment plan.

Provide Proper Diagnosis of Sciatica

As always, the first step to solving a problem is correctly identifying the problem in the first place. Our expert chiropractors shine in this area. We focus on finding the root of the pain for our patients and not just on treating the presenting symptoms. Our doctors ask insightful questions and listen to the answers. They are trained and complete continuing education to spot sciatica and diagnose it correctly.

Chiropractic Adjustments / Manipulations for Sciatic Nerve Pain Relief

After proper diagnosis, our expert team of doctors will ensure proper skeletal alignment to reduce the stress and pressure on the sciatic nerve. By relieving this pressure on the nerve, swelling can begin to decrease in the nerves and discs and the area can begin the healing process.

Dolphin Neurostim for Sciatica Pain Relief

While dolphin neurostim does not involve actual time spent with these lovely sea mammals, it’s still just as amazing for chiropractors. Our doctors use neurostim to target specific neurological points using the same naturally occurring direct current found in the human body. This helps normalize the nervous system, helps muscles relax, relieves pain, and helps patients heal faster.

Chiropractic Massage for Sciatica Pain Relief

The final step in our regular treatment of sciatica is soft tissue massage. Our chiropractors in Erie and Longmont have found that utilizing soft tissue massage combined with chiropractic adjustments and Dolphin Neurostim help the body release oxygen and blood flow to the afflicted areas. This soft tissue work relaxes the muscles and helps them re-learn the correct position of the structural areas of the body that have been corrected. By combining soft tissue work with the adjustments and neurostim treatment our patients experience relief sooner and hold their adjustments longer than through chiropractic adjustments alone.

Many Americans suffer from sciatica daily. Our skilled chiropractors successfully provide sciatica pain relief through our proven treatment process to fix the root issue of the pain, starting with alignment of the vertebra, progressing to nerve treatment for pain relief, and finally to teach the muscles to help hold that proper alignment. Through proper diagnosis, adjustments, neurostim, and soft tissue massage our patients experience quick, long-lasting relief. If you’re interested in learning more about how chiropractic can help treat sciatica naturally in Erie or Longmont, schedule your consultation for treatment today. We are dedicated to being the best chiropractor serving Erie, Longmont, and the surrounding areas. Contact us online or give us a call at 303-828-3000 or 303-772-1950.

Woman Experiencing Stress with kids in background

Chiropractic and Stress

2020 has caused many Americans an unprecedented level of stress. The American Psychological Association discusses those impacts HERE. In addition to adjusting to the impacts of a rather stressful year, the holiday season often causes stress for many people. People rush to complete last-minute shopping. They strain their bodies cleaning the house or hanging holiday lights. Winter driving creates more stress and tension behind the wheel. In short, the holiday season is magical but can raise stress levels and wreak havoc on your body. Below we discuss common symptoms of how stress manifests throughout the body. We also explore the relationship between chiropractic and stress relief.

Absolutely! Stress manifests throughout the body in many ways. Tension builds throughout the body as a result of stress. In addition to tension, many suffering from stress experience digestive problems, neurologic problems, and other problems that often appear unrelated. Chiropractors spend countless hours and years learning about the entire human body and the communication and collaboration of its’ systems. This means that chiropractors often successfully treat stress-related symptoms and help patients find more complete relief than they initially expect.

Chiropractors specialize in the spine and neck, also called the cervical spine. These areas represent a major structural component to the body. Perhaps more importantly, they also represent the major network for communication from the brain to all major systems in the body. This means that chiropractors understand the broad impact of stress throughout the body. By treating the body and opening up the key communication networks, chiropractors help treat stress holistically. Examples of different ways chiropractors help alleviate stress include:

Reducing Muscle Tension

Stress causes muscles to tighten and tense throughout the body. As these muscles tighten they can pull the body out of alignment or further exacerbate improper alignment issues. These tense muscles lead to discomfort and even pain in many people. This new pain and discomfort create sleeping problems. The pain from the tension throughout the body, combined with poor sleep leads to further stress. This stress creates more tension and the cycle continues without many patients understanding their options for relief.

A trained chiropractor helps a patient release tension throughout the muscles in their body. They also provide adjustments to realign the body’s spine providing relief for the muscles AND a break from straining harder than necessary. Once the body is aligned our skilled doctors provide a combination of dolphin neurostim and soft tissue care for the patients. This helps retrain the body to hold alignment for longer periods of time and relieves the natural tension caused by the stress, thus breaking the physical side of the vicious stress cycle mentioned above. Learn more about our award-winning treatment process here!

Fix Communication Channels for Major Body Systems

As mentioned above, stress can create tension throughout the muscles making it easier to pull the body out of alignment. When improperly aligned, the body not only experiences pain and discomfort, it causes communication issues for the body’s major systems. This can cause patients to experience stomach issues, headaches, neurological issues, and more. Chiropractic adjustments help the body maintain proper alignment, which allows the body’s systems to work more effectively. Proper alignment not only allows increased blood flow to areas of the body, but also opens up the nervous system to provide relief throughout the body. Many patients visit us expecting pain relief, and they get it. They often also report feeling relief from gastrointestinal discomfort, headaches, and other ailments.

Provide Chronic Pain Relief

Many Americans overlook stress or consider it a part of their daily lives. This causes many patients to live with the side-effects of stress for long periods of time. They often only seek out help when they’ve experienced chronic pain that keeps them from performing their regular daily activities. The Chiropractic Center of Erie and Chiropractic Center of Longmont specialize in treating chronic pain as well as helping the body hold proper alignment to stop the pain from returning. Chiropractic and stress relief through daily routine changes can transform a patient’s quality of life.

Provide Regular Maintenance to Help the Body Cope With Stress

Everyone experiences stress differently and for many people, it’s an unavoidable fact of life. We understand that life must go on and our patients will have a variety of reasons to need to learn to cope with stressful situations. We only ask that you let us help. Our doctors can help patients drastically reduce the symptoms from prolonged stress through regular visits. Many patients are familiar with the required maintenance for their vehicles, but they often overlook the value of regular maintenance for their bodies. Through regular treatments, patients can maximize the incredible power of the human body and teach it to navigate stress more effectively.

Many people in America suffer from stress. They often experience tension in their muscles, problems with sleep, trouble with digestion, and other symptoms. Although it would be great to live a life without stress, we understand that’s simply not possible for most people. We believe we are able to help patients learn to use their bodies to cope with their stress more effectively while providing the relief they need. Whether you need relief from the tension, better communication throughout your body, help with chronic pain, or regular visits to minimize the effects of stress, we’ve got your back (pun intended)! If you’re interested in learning more about how chiropractic can help relieve stress in Erie or Longmont, schedule your consultation for treatment today. We are dedicated to being the best chiropractor serving Erie, Longmont, and the surrounding areas. Contact us online or give us a call at 303-828-3000 or 303-772-1950.

A women lying down suffering from TMJ symptoms

TMJ Awareness Month

November marks the beginning of the Holiday season in the United States. Many people prepare to sit down with family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, several million Americans will be concerned about their ongoing jaw pain as they sit down to this dinner. The Chiropractic Center of Erie and the Chiropractic Center of Longmont would like to help spread the word about how chiropractic care can help you find relief from Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder. We figured what better time to share this information than during November, which also happens to be TMJ Awareness Month.

The term TMJ is short for temporomandibular joint. It not only describes the joints between the upper and lower jaws, TMJ often refers to the disorder which presents as pain in those joints as well.

According to the Mayo Clinic, many patients experience the below symptoms.

  1. Pain or tenderness of your jaw

  2. Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints

  3. Aching pain in and around your ear

  4. Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing

  5. Aching facial pain

  6. Locking of the joint, making it difficult to open or close your mouth

Some patients also experience a clicking sound or grating feeling in the joints as well as the typical pain associated. Clicking sounds or grating feelings in the jaw without pain can exist without requiring treatment for TMJ.

There are many factors that increase the likelihood of experiencing pain related to TMJ. Although some patients experience TMJ-related pain without the underlying cause being identified, most TMJ cases are caused by the below factors.

  1. The disk between the cartilage and the bone erodes

  2. The joint moves out of its proper alignment

  3. The joint’s cartilage is damaged by arthritis

  4. The joint is damaged by a blow or other impact

The short answer, yes! However, many people experiencing pain related to TMJ consult their dentist first. This makes sense on the surface; when you’re dealing with pain around the mouth or jaw you often talk to known experts in those areas. At the Chiropractic Centers of Erie and Longmont, we value and appreciate dentists’ opinions and work. However, many dentists recommend medications to treat the pain. In some cases, they recommend orthodontia or oral surgery to adjust your bite. What if we told you, that we’re experts in the joints and muscles in your jaw as well?

As chiropractors, our doctors can successfully treat TMJ in most cases without taking any of those steps. We focus on aligning the TM joint to improve joint alignment and function and, subsequently, normalizing the bite. Our doctors follow this up by targeting the muscles and joints surrounding the afflicted temporomandibular joints. Our Chiropractors help relax these muscles by utilizing massage and trigger point therapy. This helps ensure proper alignment. They take treatment one step further by applying Dolphin Neurostim therapy to calm the nerves and sedate pain in the area. A skilled doctor can manipulate these trigger points located throughout the neck and jaw to relieve the pain associated with TMJ and even prevent TMJ from recurring in the future.

Many people in America suffer from pain related to TMJ. They often experience pain throughout their jaws, neck, and face and this pain recurs regularly. As part of TMJ awareness month, we want to offer patients suffering from TMJ an alternative to over-the-counter medication or dental surgery. We treat TMJ without invasive procedures or harmful medication. If you’re interested in learning more about TMJ treatment in Erie or Longmont check out our dedicated service page here. If you’d like to schedule your consultation for TMJ treatment, contact us online or give us a call at 303-828-3000 or 303-772-1950.

Man Getting Adjusted by Chiropractor in Longmont

Top 10 Reasons to Visit a Chiropractor

The Chiropractic Center of Erie has been serving families for decades in Northern Colorado. We even opened the Chiropractic Center of Longmont this year to help more patients get back to living healthier, pain-free lives. Our trusted doctors and our entire staff have seen patients transformed through chiropractic care. It’s not just our livelihoods, it’s our passion that keeps us serving patients. Over the years, we’ve treated many clients for many different reasons. No two patients are the same, but we have seen very consistent reasons for seeking chiropractic help. With that being said, here are our top 10 reasons to visit a chiropractor.

  1. Back and Neck Pain Relief

Patients visit us most often with complaints of back and neck pain. Poor alignment often causes pain in these areas and can be treated by a good chiropractor effectively in many cases. Many reasons cause the body to lose its natural alignment including sleeping in a bad position, poor posture, auto accidents, or hard falls. Once the body is out of alignment, if left untreated the muscles tighten around the area to compensate for the weakness. Over time, the body forgets what proper alignment feels like and patients live with chronic pain they don’t understand.

  2. Headache Relief

Nearly every person experiences headaches at least once a week. Many more experience them regularly throughout their day or week. This creates frustration for patients who feel their only options for relief are through over-the-counter pain medication. In fact, about 95% of headaches are due to tension, migraine, and cluster headaches. This means that nearly all headaches can be alleviated through proper chiropractic care. Headaches often present themselves as a symptom of a problem within your body and medication only masks the symptom without treating the problem. Chiropractic care gets to the root of the problem and often helps patients live headache-free.

  3. Poor Sleep

Sleep provides a natural reset for the human body. A good night’s sleep has been proven to boost your immune system, strengthen your heart, and as friends and family can attest, improve your mood. Improper alignment within the body makes it hard to get comfortable and harder to sleep in one position for long periods of time. Chiropractors can help you maximize your sleeping time by opening up the natural systems within the body and relieving pain.

  4. Natural, Holistic Pain Relief | No Medicine

Many people in Western civilization don’t recognize the benefits of holistic healing methods. They are taught to treat symptoms and not the underlying cause of an issue. As a chiropractor, we specialize in the underlying causes especially since we primarily treat the underlying neuromuscular and skeletal systems. Taking pills for long periods of time, not only masks underlying issues, they create their own problems. Many medications, when taken for long periods of time, lead to a multitude of issues. Chiropractors often provide longer-lasting pain relief without the harmful side-effects of over-the-counter medicines.

  5. Blood Pressure Normalization | No More Hypertension

According to the CDC, nearly half of all Americans suffer from high blood pressure. In 2018, nearly half a million deaths listed high blood pressure as the primary or contributing cause of death. Chiropractic adjustments relieve tension, lower stress, and open the channels throughout the human body. This helps lower blood pressure significantly over the long-term and is a great option to be utilized as a part of an overall treatment plan.

  6. Pregnancy Discomfort

Women’s bodies undergo dynamic changes throughout their pregnancy. With widening hips, lower back adjusting to compensate for more weight, and other major changes taking place, many women express feelings of great discomfort throughout their terms. Chiropractic adjustments not only help relieve some of this discomfort, a good chiropractor can help the expecting mom’s body manage these changes. With a skilled chiropractor, women have reported less weight gain, balanced hormones, and a better night’s sleep.

  7. Digestive Issues

The spine represents the largest part of your neurological system. When out of alignment, key signals sent from your digestive system may not get through. This causes many digestive issues in some patients. Proper alignment helps these signals get through to the correct places in the body and helps prevent weight gain, constipation, and other digestive disorders.

  8. Stress Release

The body experiences many stress-related symptoms. One such symptom is tension build up in major muscle groups. As these muscles tighten they can force the body out of alignment causing more pain and discomfort. The added pain and discomfort cause added stress to the body. As you can see, this creates a vicious circle that many patients are unaware of until they experience stress release through chiropractic care. Our unique chiropractic treatment process breaks this circle and opens up the neuromuscular systems in your body. This not only relieves the pain but helps the body cope with stress better.

Chiropractic Center of Erie patient receiving dry needling treatment by Dr. Dave

Dry Needling Benefits

First of all, let’s address the elephant in the room. We know Dry Needling sounds scary and painful. Despite its scary name, however, many patients benefit from this often overlooked therapy. Not only are the benefits of Dry Needling outstanding, our patients often report no pain and very minimal discomfort during treatment. The “Dry” part of the name simply means that instead of injecting something into a patient, the needles contain no medicine or fluid at all. They are similar to acupuncture needles and their benefits are far more accessible for patients than “wet” needles.

Mayo Clinic describes Dry Needling as “a treatment performed by skilled, trained physical therapists, certified in the procedure. A thin monofilament needle penetrates the skin and treats underlying muscular trigger points for the management of neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement impairments.” In more simple terms a very small and thin needle is inserted to target trigger points in the body to send relief to areas of the body that need it quickly. While Dry Needling therapy is often performed by a physical therapist, Dr. Dave earned his certification in Dry Needling to better serve patients in Erie, Longmont, and all surrounding areas. He was one of the first 15 practitioners in the world to earn the Structure and Function Dry Needling (SFDN) degree. The SFDN is earned by completing a rigorous education program. A major staple of the training teaches practitioners how to avoid pain fibers and get down to the muscles when inserting the needle. Several patients have had to ask whether the needle was even inserted at all!

Dry Needling relieves muscle stiffness, soreness, tension, and metabolic waste chemicals. It causes increased blood flow and oxygen to a targeted area and flushes away harmful toxins that develop in stiff and sore areas that the body tries to protect. Essentially, Dry Needling is like calling 911 to an address for an emergency. The needle acts as the phone call alerting the brain that there is a problem at a specific site or address in the body. The brain and body react by focusing healing into the area with the lesion.

  1. Pain Relief

While counterintuitive based on the idea of having needles inserted, Dry Needling sends quick pain relief to patients that have chronic pain in their muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and more.

  2. Increased Mobility

Many afflictions and chronic pain cause patients to lose mobility over time. This begins with the initial pain and the problem grows over time because the muscles tighten due to lack of use. Dry Needling increases the blood flow to an area and alleviates the soreness and stiffness. This allows patients to get back to their physical activities more quickly.

  3. Faster Recovery Time

The body often responds to an injury by flooding the impacted area with metabolic waste to protect it from further damage. Metabolic waste is another term for chemicals left behind from metabolic processes. This waste includes lactic acid which causes the soreness and stiffness many athletes and injured patients are accustomed to. By targeting trigger points in the body and increasing blood flow and oxygen to these areas, we can eliminate the waste so patients can focus on their active recovery.

Patients should consider Dry Needling if they experience chronic pain, stiffness, or soreness. It’s also a great option for athletes who have been injured and are looking to improve their recovery time. Another great reason to consider Dry Needling is if your normal treatment and recovery have reached a plateau. Patients often find they can push through this plateau or speed up their recovery by utilizing the benefits of Dry Needling. It’s important to note that Dry Needling attaches to an existing treatment plan and should only be performed by a certified practitioner.

While dry needling sounds scary and painful it’s actually growing in popularity throughout the world due to its incredible benefits. Not only do most patients feel no pain, it helps patients get pain relief, increase their mobility, and recover from injury faster. All this is done holistically and requires no surgery, medication, or otherwise. It’s a scientific practice that utilizes the body’s own response mechanisms to work more efficiently for the patient.
